Get Back in Control, Avoid Always Being Busy
Get Back in Control, Avoid Always Being Busy In my last article I talked about how itâs okay not to be ambitious, as well the importance of finding fulfilment at work and in life in ways that suit you. In our 24/7 work environment we are always busy, always on the move and always under pressure but technological developments have offered opportunities to change the way we work and where we work. Most of us have to work, at least some of the time, to keep the wolf from the door and cater for our needs and wants. Itâs great if you find a job you love and can work at something that you describe as your âpassionâ. However, that doesnât happen for all of us; some never find a job they even remotely like. Worse, when we get back from a week on holiday, the email inbox is overflowing and the same old routine is waiting to suck us back into the vortex of busyness. We tell ourselves that being busy means we are successful, making progress, doing important stuff. Most of us spend a lot of time at work and too many people seem to feel they donât have control over their working lives. Working on a flexible basis and managing our work responsibilities to dovetail with other interests and commitments is important. Some organisations, like ours, operates on a Results Only Work Environment where each person in the organisation is 100% accountable and 100% autonomous. Prioritise down time The ROWE concept was created by Jody Thompson and Cali Ressler and aims to give managers the tools to define goals which may or may not be met by the results of individual contributors working for that manager. This focus on results allows significant freedom to the organisation to focus less on the minute details of employee daily routine and more on results. Itâs the quality of work that matters, not the hours spent at the desk It doesnât really matter if the work is done in the serviced office or the under-the-stairs office cubby, on Monday morning or Sunday afternoon. What matters is that good work is delivered as agreed. Then, when weâve finished being busy, busy, busy we can head for the park, or bake a cake or write an essay. Time spent doing things other than work is not necessarily being wasted, if we are learning and exploring it all adds to the rich mix, and is where creativity at work tends to come from. Be realistic You are probably not really as busy as you think you are, Nils F. Schott, the James M. Motley Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, who specialises in the philosophy of time, says that humans enjoy being busy when a task is fulfilling but may feel weighted when a task feels obligatory or when they feel pulled in two directions. We tend to fritter away our time or fill it with obligations that need not be a priority. Itâs more important to make time for the things you want to achieve than to be constantly complaining about how busy you are. Take a break Thatâs not a recommendation to reach for a chocolate bar, though I wouldnât usually say ânoâ but a suggestion that you break your working day from time to time. Bob Kustka, founder of Fusion Factor, a productivity and time-management consulting firm in Norwell, Massachusetts says, âThe longer you work, the less efficient you are. Workers are like athletes in that they are most efficient in concentrated bursts. Working energy, like physical energy, is best used in spurts where we work hard on a few focused activities and then take a brief respiteâ. German designer Tobias Van Schneider dislikes the term âwork-life balanceâ because it assumes one side (work) is evil and unenjoyable and must be balanced out with the other side (life) that is good. He says that if you donât enjoy your job enough to look forward to it, it may be time to seek new employment or change your perspective.

The Word For Resume Writing
The Word For Resume WritingIf you want to write a resume that will be remembered, the first thing you need to understand is that 'word for resume writing' is an important skill. The reason why is because when it comes to writing resumes, the first impression is usually the most important one and this means that you should always do your best to make a great first impression. When it comes to making a first impression, this means that you should write your resume in a way that captures the attention of the reader right from the start. Ideas to ease the plunge into entrepreneurship
Ideas to ease the plunge into entrepreneurship At some point, youve probably thought about starting your own company. Maybe you want to get rich and famous from it, but most likely you just want to have fun, learn a lot, and try something new. The trick is getting the guts to do it. Whatever you want to gain from starting a business, theres never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. Its easier than ever to get things going quickly and inexpensively. And todays opportunities for entrepreneurship allow you to maintain a sense of stability in your personal life while trying out some of your business ideas. Here are five ideas to give you the courage to get started now. 1. Dont wait to start until youre sure youll succeed. Assured success never happens. For instance, Guy Kawasaki, who was known for evangelizing the Apple brand before starting his own firm, Garage Technology Ventures, launched his own startup, Truemors, this month. Its a site that allows people to post rumors theyve heard and then let others vote on the rumors for popularity ranking. When asked how he knew Truemors would work, Kawasaki said that he didnt. You dont get over the idea that it might be a flop. Every startup faces these feelings. Its not like the founders started Google and people said, Oh, thats a slam dunk. In fact, when people do say its a slam dunk, you can be sure itll tank. 2. You dont have to dive in head-first. It used to be that if you wanted to start a business youd have to move your family into the apartment above your general store. Luckily, you no longer have to overhaul your whole life in order to take the leap into business ownership. In fact, you can take small steps to test the waters before leaving your corporate job. For example, take a freelance gig, then try consulting, and then launch a full-blown business. That way, youll have a client base built up before you give up your steady paycheck. You can also launch a quickie web-based business that you build on nights and weekends, and see who shows up and who talks about it. If its a flop, you can just keep working your day job until you come up with a new idea. The quick response of an Internet audience means that it takes months, not years, to figure out if you have a viable business. 3. You dont need to spend a lot of money. Starting an Internet company isnt nearly as expensive as it once was. You used to need up to $5 million in funding from a venture capital firm in order to cover software development and marketing. Today, the software behind many Internet companies is very cheap, if not free, and marketing consists of sending an email announcement about the company to 50 friends. So the money you need to think about is in the thousands, not the millions. Think of making your company virtual, with no specific location. This means there are few overhead costs no rent, no phone line, and no furniture. So the risk of failure doesnt include risking your ability to pay your mortgage, which is often the case with a failed business stuck in a lease. 4. Rethink success and failure theyre not black-and-white conditions. Starting a company doesnt have to mean youre building the next Microsoft. It simply gives you an opportunity to learn and grow, and offers you the chance to work with your friends and create the lifestyle you want. This means that starting a business is a lot less risky than it seems. Conversely, sticking with a corporate job with no assurance that youll stay or, that if you do, youll learn anything is the more risky choice. The diverse goals of todays entrepreneurs mean that most companies are a success in some way. If nothing else, its difficult to start a company and not learn a lot given the amount of time and effort you put in. Even if the endeavor is as small as a blog-based business, as Ryan Healy of Employee Evolution points out, you learn a lot faster by starting side projects than waiting for your boss to teach you something. 5. Take action. Ben Casnocha founded Comcate when he was 14, and its still running strong five years later. His book, My Start-Up Life, describes what it takes to get a company up and running. Bens big message is to take action: In the early days of any new business, its easier to plan than to act. Its easier to strategize than actually do stuff. I tried to keep action the centerpiece of my strategy. Starting a business is taking a risk on your own idea, but its a very small one compared to leading a life with no risks. Its much more interesting to see how your idea plays out even if it doesnt work at all than to never try doing something on your own. So take one small action today. Starting a business isnt the huge, sweeping act it once was. Its simply taking many smaller actions that add up to some of the biggest, best experiences of your life.

Professional Resume Writing Services Can Help
Professional Resume Writing Services Can HelpWhen you are in need of some professional resume writing services, you have to make sure that you choose the right one. There are lots of talented people out there who are trying to make a living out of helping people get their dream jobs. If you find that your job search is going well, you should also look for a Toronto resume writing service. A good one can help you develop an excellent resume that will stand out from the rest. You can find plenty of job services in your city through many of the local job fairs and community gatherings. Most of these people will be extremely helpful and will be able to give you information about what to expect during the hiring process. They can provide you with tips on how to write a solid resume and help you understand your options. You should never feel intimidated by this, because hiring managers are always looking for a little extra expertise. Some of them are so picky that they are willing to pay mo re to get the help of someone who knows what they are doing.Once you find a resume writing service that you are comfortable with, you should start by getting a handful of sample resumes. In fact, it would be a good idea to have several of them on hand so that you can check them over before actually using them for your job search. This will allow you to see what each of them is like and help you decide which ones will work for you. While it is not necessary, you should also think about the personal appearance of the resume and how it will appear on your resume. Ideally, it should be more professional looking than one that you use for a local job fair. It is important to have a resume that looks professional so that it does not appear to be just a document that was created by someone who was not trained in the area of your job. Your future employer is very likely to look for your previous employment if you are looking for a new job.A resume should have some basics that can be easily ch ecked. It should be organized and the information should be clearly written and factual. It should also be on point and not be filled with grammatical mistakes. As long as you do not have a bad resume, you should not worry about the small things, but they can still be a big distraction if you let them get in the way.You should also find out how long the professional resume writing services that you are looking at can take to complete. The longer it takes, the more you will have to spend on additional fees for the services. Do not be tempted to sign up for the very first service that you find because the reason you are trying to find good resume writing services is because you know that you do not have the best writing skills. After you have completed your resume, you should also check that it is error free. If it is not, you may want to consider having it sent to a professional proof reader or a professional editor to fix any mistakes that you may have made. An error-free resume is a n important element of your job search because your potential employer will see it and will not be able to know whether you are trying to hide something from them. If you try to hide anything from your future employer, you will probably be passed over for the next hire. The best way to find a good resume writing service is to do some searching and to ask around. Find a few resume writing services that you like and then set up a meeting so that you can get your resume read by a professional.

What gets measured gets done True or False - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
What gets measured gets done True or False - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Ive heard it often: What gets measured gets done. Its especially popular among proponents of Balanced Scorecards and similar management tools. I think its wrong. Click more and Ill tell you why I think so. Well first of all, what does the statement mean? Most often its used as a reason to measure performance in your organization, so it has several meanings: 1: If you want to make sure that something is done, you need to measure it. 2: You can adequately measure results 3: You can know the state of your organization through measurements I disagree. Its not that measurements in an organization are superfluous its just never the whole truth. Heres why I disagree with the statement: If you only accept the results that you can measure (and most people who tout the statement do), then the statement becomes a tautology and thus is meaningless. It then says in effect that What gets measured is what we have measured. So (and this is pretty funny) this statement only makes sense, if you accept the existence of non-measured results. And this is the whole point: In all organizations, much of the work done and much of the value created is unmeasured and maybe even unmeasureable. Lets say a person has a great day, and spreads a good mood in his department. Can you measure that? No! Is it important? Certainly! It can have a significant impact on that departments productivity. Lets say a project comes in on time and on budget. You can (and probably will measure that, as well you should). Maybe that project cost one of the key workers her marriage. Will that be measured? No! Is it important? Well, when she resigns in three months, it will be! So what gets measured is not what gets done. Theres so much else being done that has huge impact on your organization, which will never be measured. We must learn to live with this! Thanks for visiting my blog.
